The Gospel of John

John Chapter 1
Scripture: John 1:14
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Observation: Verse 14 states, “and we beheld His (Jesus) glory.” This does not mean that John is saying that the disciples knew who Jesus was. John was an eyewitness of many of the things that Jesus did but in John chapter one verses 10 &11, John tells us that “the world did not know Him (Jesus)” and “His own did not receive Him.” Even though John witnessed what Jesus was doing he still did not completely understand who Jesus was and why Jesus had come to the earth. Later in the chapter it is inferred that John was one of the disciples of John the Baptist who followed Jesus (verses 35-42). These two disciples of John even called Jesus the Messiah but still they did not really understand what his purpose was on this earth (see verse 29).

Application: How many times do I misread who Jesus is and miss out on what He is doing in my life? Why? Because I create my own paradigms of “who Jesus is” and presume to know what he is doing! John can say, “and we beheld His glory” but John is saying this from the perspective of the past tense; ‘now we know’. I want to receive what Jesus is doing in my life now! I don’t always want to have the perspective of; “now looking back I can see what God was doing.” I want to embrace and receive God’s glory in the here and now. I want to behold my Messiah and embrace with comprehension what He is doing in my life today!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I want to worship you today with the perspective of the present. I want to behold your glory today for what you are doing in my life, in the lives of others and in this world. I pray like Moses, “Lord, show me your glory.”
